Departures showing the stops near Circular Quay with live countdowns for trains, buses and ferries A station board in Departures: every line and platform with live departure times A Departures Live Activity counting down to a departure on the iPhone Lock Screen A trip in Departures: the route on a map and every stop with its time
How it works

Three taps to the next departure.

No account and no setup: it starts where you are.

1 · Open it

The stops around you appear with their next departures. A red dot marks a live time.

2 · Tap a stop

Every line and platform, live. Save it to keep it on top and in your widgets.

3 · Follow a departure

Tap one, then “Follow on the Lock Screen” for a countdown that follows you.

Features

The next departure, at a glance.

Built on Transport for NSW Open Data, for everyone who rides.

Live countdowns

Open the app and the stops around you are there, with live times from Transport for NSW. A red dot marks a live time.

Every platform, every stop

A station shows every line and platform. A trip shows every stop, with the live delay carried down the line.

Lock Screen and widgets

Follow a departure on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, and keep your stops on the Home Screen.

Works underground

The whole NSW timetable is on your phone, so the times are there without a signal. New timetables arrive by themselves.

Five languages

English, 简体中文, 繁體中文, العربية and Tiếng Việt: the languages Australians speak most at home.

Private by design

No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. Your saved stops stay on your phone.

Privacy

Your data stays on your phone.

Departures has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Nothing is sold or shared, because nothing is collected.

Location

Optional. The app uses it on your phone to show the stops near you. It's never stored, shared or sent anywhere.

Live times

When you look at a stop, the app sends that stop's number, and nothing else, to our live-times server. The server asks Transport for NSW and passes the answer back. It keeps no logs of who asked.

Timetable updates

New timetables download from GitHub, like any file on the web; GitHub's privacy statement covers that download. The app sends nothing with it.

Saved stops, settings and Siri

Saved stops and settings stay on your phone, where the widgets can read them too. Siri requests are handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy.

Where do the times come from?
From Transport for NSW Open Data, licensed under CC BY 4.0. A red dot marks a live time. A time without a dot is from the timetable.
Why doesn't every departure have a red dot?
Live times appear only when the operator reports that service. When it doesn't, you see the timetable time.
Do I need an internet connection?
No, not for timetables: the whole timetable is on your phone, and new timetables arrive by themselves. Live times need a connection and fill in as soon as you're back online.
What does it cover?
Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink, from the intercity lines to regional trains to Albury, Dubbo, Armidale, Grafton and Broken Hill. It also covers Sydney Metro, Sydney Ferries, light rail, and buses across Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Newcastle and the Hunter, the Central Coast and Wollongong.
Which languages does it speak?
English, 简体中文, 繁體中文, العربية and Tiếng Việt: the five languages Australians speak most at home. The app follows your phone's language. Stop and line names stay as they're written on the signs.
How do I follow a departure on the Lock Screen?
Open a trip and tap "Follow on the Lock Screen". The countdown then shows on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island.
Can I use Siri?
Yes. Save a stop, then say "Next departures from Central Station in Departures".
Does it cost anything?
Departures is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases.
Is any of my data collected?
No. There are no accounts, no analytics and no tracking. The app sends only a stop's number to fetch its live times, and the server keeps no logs of who asked.
Is this the official Transport for NSW app?
No. Departures is an independent app built on Transport for NSW's open data. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Transport for NSW.
Which devices?
iPhone and iPad, on iOS 18 or later.
