FAQ

Questions about the speed test.

Why are mobile and desktop results different?
The mobile test loads your page as a mid-range phone would, with a slower processor and a simulated 4G connection. Desktop uses a fast connection. Most sites score lower on mobile, and Google ranks pages mostly on their mobile experience.
Why does my score change between tests?
Every load is a little different: server load, ads, A/B tests and network conditions all move the numbers. A few points between runs is normal. For decisions, look at the real-user data and its six-month trend.
What is the difference between lab results and real-user data?
Lab results come from one controlled page load right now, which makes them good for finding causes. Real-user data comes from Chrome visitors over the last 28 days, at the 75th percentile. It is what Google uses for Core Web Vitals in search.
Why is there no real-user data for my site?
Google only publishes real-user data for pages and sites with enough Chrome visitors. New or low-traffic sites get the lab results only.
How is the speed grade calculated?
60% performance score and 40% structure score. The structure score starts at 100, and every speed check the page fails takes off a share by its impact: 12% for high, 6% for medium and 2% for low. A is 90 or more, B 80, C 70, D 60, E 50, and F is below 50.
Is it free, and do you keep my results?
It is free and needs no sign-up. A report is kept for about 15 minutes so that reloading it is instant, then deleted. We keep nothing about you except an anonymised counter that limits how many tests one connection can run per hour.
Can you fix the issues for us?
Yes. We build fast websites and speed up slow ones: images, scripts, fonts, caching, hosting and Core Web Vitals. Send us your report and you get a fixed-scope proposal with the price upfront.
